DeKalb County's strong economy and employment base continues to expand rapidly, driving economic growth throughout the region. In fact, DeKalb offers employers one of the largest, easy to access labor draw areas in the state. A review of the county's key demographics reveals that, among metro Atlanta's 20 counties:
  • DeKalb ranks third in total population
  • DeKalb ranks second in total labor force and can attract a labor force of 1.4 million from six metro area counties
  • DeKalb’ s personal income is the third highest in Georgia and 14% above the state average

Population

Population in DeKalb grew by an estimated 120,000 people, or 22 percent between 1990 and 2000. This growth rate is projected to rise another four percent in the next decade and add another 25,000 residents.

Total population in DeKalb was an estimated 679,804 in 2005.

Labor Force & Employment

Labor force in DeKalb County, comprised of DeKalb and the five counties that often provide workers for DeKalb businesses, grew 34 percent from 1990 to 2000. Job growth in the county will be nearly 50 percent higher than population growth through the year 2025. Total labor force in DeKalb was 389,264 in 2005, with another 1 million plus in the counties adjacent to DeKalb. Adding an advantage to this labor pool and employers is the counties peerless accessibility options, which include MARTA rapid rail and bus service.

Employment in DeKalb grew 23 percent in the last decade, its businesses adding nearly 70,000 net new jobs. Employment in 2005 was 367,039 jobs. In the next decade the county will follow the nation's growth trends, with projected growth of more than 10 percent and an increase of more than 44,000 jobs.

Housing

Housing in DeKalb grew by more than 37,500 single and multi-family units in the last decade, at a valuation of more than $3.6 billion.  Total units in the county stood at an estimated 297,835 in 2005, with single-family units estimated at more than 60 percent of the total housing stock.
